Why Do We Read Murder Mystery Books?

By Andrea Davidson

Reading is a pastime shared by many. Settling down with a good book is relaxing and therapeutic. Fiction is a very popular choice among readers especially murder mystery books.

With the popularity of TV shows that deal with forensics, there has been a rise in the purchase of murder mysteries. In books, crime solving seems glamorous and often fun and exciting. People love to solve puzzles, and guessing whodunit based on the clues given in the book is a challenge.

Mysteries are also fun and keep the reader's interest with lots of suspense and action. The characters are very believable and often have side stories going on, just like we do in real life. The perpetrators are clever and often send the protagonist off on wild goose chases before they are caught, with many twists and turns in the plot.

Murder mysteries dig deeper than what we might see on the news or in the paper. These books show us the story behind a crime-what happens that the general public does not see. The main characters are able to get out of trouble every time, which is not often the case in reality. These stories can make us feel that if our lives end tragically that someone will indeed care and murderers will be brought to justice.

People often have a fear of death and these stories allow us to face it nonconfrontationally. In our modern society we often do not experience death in all its glory, it is handled by hospital workers, law enforcement personnel, and funeral home workers. This can enable us to see what happens after murder or death without becoming emotionally distraught.

In murder mysteries, justice is always served-perpetrators of crimes get what is coming to them. This is in contrast with reality where sometimes criminals are not apprehended or may beat their charges on technicalities. Often in stories, all of the loose end are tied up and there is a happy ending.

It is also interesting to delve into the personalities of the victims, the criminals, and the protagonists. Most people are not psychologists so seeing the motivation behind why people might possibly do what they do is fascinating. What drives people to commit these types of crimes that most people cannot imagine doing?

Murder mysteries are also a form of fantasy that appears very realistic. Some readers have a hard time getting into science fiction or other genres that may require them to be immersed in a whole different world, learn a new societal structure, or pronounce unfamiliar words in make believe languages. Mysteries are usually set in our own world, either in the past or in the present, and do not require a lot of thought to become immersed in the story.

As human beings, we often enjoy being spectators at car crashes, fires, and natural disasters. The top news stories of the day quite often deal with tragedy or scandal. We are drawn to the spectacular and macabre. This literary genre allows the reader to be involved in these types of disasters without being harmed. Murder mystery books are fun to read and quite often face us with dilemmas that give us something to ponder.
