How To Add "the Feel" To Your Hip Hop Mix

By Delroy Wilkins

Sound is very important when you are learning the ropes in mixing instrumentals. But, mastery of sound mixing is not the end all and be all of hip hop although it is a vital chunk of this genre. You also need to delve further and consider the feel of the instrumentals. As a way of self-expression, the mix should have the feel. Not to be presumptuous or anything but sound quality is overshadowed by the feel of the mix. The feel is influenced by 3 things, the balance, the punch and the image of you instrumentals. You need to consider these elements to give a feel to those beats and make them addictive.

Add groove. Although music is heard with the ears, the body responds to sounds because of the groove in a song. Instrumentals that lack groove will fail to connect to listeners and many will decide whether to listen to a track or not because of the groove. With groove incorporated within a track, you will be able to grab the listener's attention regardless of the track quality.

2. Use unbalanced beats to your advantage. When there are elements that step on another, the instrumentals give a good feeling. Keeping one of the keys unbalances is also a great way to build tension in a mix. You can use the imbalance to create a climax and bring it back to balance levels for the release. Using the imbalance is a great way to direct the listener's attention to a sound.

3. Add depth. The song creates a picture for the listeners and to make the image more realistic and give them something to relate to, you need to target a 3D image. This image can be created through the use of resonance in space or through the interchange of musicians. Depth adds emotion to a song and it can add a new avenue to your mix.

Focus on track arrangement and dynamics during transitions. Variety makes hip hop tracks more interesting. Audiences prefer to listen to songs which are not too repetitive and plain. During changes within the track, you should focus on creating dynamic transitions to mark these changes which improve the tracks flow. The changes within a track are an important part and you should focus on using instrumentals to mark these changes without altering the flow of the track.

Make every element count. Each track involves the use of a series of beats. Working on your tracks beats ensures that the final production reflects good music production as well as places emphasis on how special the particular track is. Before giving the listeners a track to listen to, work on it until you are satisfied that it will create the feel you wish to achieve.
