The Reasons For Use Of Mole Traps

By Carmella Watts

Mole traps are among the most identified structures in the agricultural sector. They usually come into play when the question of trapping pests arises. However, they cannot be used for trapping just any pest. They are used for a particular animal known as the mole.

The main reason, as to why these traps are set, is to capture these species that are highly detrimental to plants. Some individuals may just capture them and then do away with them by throwing them away. Others however in some places take the opportunity to earn extra income. There are some individuals who usually eat the meat of these animals. As such, the people capturing them have an option of selling them at a good fee, to those people who consume these animals.

The animal is not one very big one. It is a small animal that is very unique in appearance. Its physique is a brown fur. It has got four very small legs which it utilizes in movement. The most common of its qualities however, is the small two teeth that it has. The teeth are used in gnawing at the roots of plants. The legs as well as the teeth are also used in digging along the soil so as to access more roots.

The structures used in ensnaring these pests are not elaborate. All they need is expertise in their use. Some individuals with much experience in the making of these structures may never purchase them at all. They only have to find some good wood, assemble it well and place it in the path of those animals. Some people however may not have much experience in the activity of constructing them. These ones may resort to buying theirs, though both are equally effective.

The traps used in curbing the activities of these animals are not very complex structures. In fact, many a time, they are made locally. They only involve assembling some sticks into a characteristic shape and putting then strategically on the path of that animal. However, some may be sold in the markets and shopping malls. These may be considered more effective, though the local ones used with expertise are equally effective.

The activity of getting hold of these pests has got its own advantages and disadvantages as well. They usually destroy a very large number of crops if not identified earlier. If identified in good time therefore, the farmer can with expertise lay the trap in position, ready to capture the creatures. This ensures high yields in the long run.

These pests may be destructive, but they also have their importance. As such, trapping them may be considered a disadvantage in terms of soil development. They usually serve as very important air aerators by creating their channels. Their removal therefore interferes with soil structure development.

Mole traps are very common structures in the lives of virtually all farmers. They have helped a great deal to trap these pests. When used very well, they have always been effective hence raising the produce of those farms.
