By Grace Daniels

Aerial silk, which is also commonly called aerial acrobatics or contortion, refers to a type of performance art. During these acts, one more multiple artists do aerial acrobatics. This is all done as they are hanging from special silk fabrics that are suspended from the ceiling. Performers rely solely on training or skill, as they are not harnessed by in safety lines.

The performers start by climbing the suspended fabric. This is then used to swing, wrap, suspend, spiral and fall into an assortment of positions. These artists are known to strike figures and poses on these silk fabrics as they fly through the air. Some professionals will apply rosin on their feet and hands to ensure that they have a better grip of the fabric, and in an effort to increase the friction.

Fabrics that are used for this process are strong, flexible and offer some amount of give. They vary in size depending on the preference of an acrobat or the kind of routine that is being done. Typically they are long enough to allow for rigging, which is the hanging of such silks and hammocks. The fabric is a two-way lycra with polyester. It includes either medium or low stretch. Wraps refers to the poses that are static and involve wrapping the fabric around different areas of the body. Typically the complex wraps make for stronger friction and the less amount of power the is needed to hold the body up. For drops, the acrobats wrap high up on the silk and allow themselves to drop down to a lower position. This type of trick requires a great amount of control and strength. It can be extremely dangerous.

As a whole, these acrobats are flexible, limber and strong beings. They put a lot of time and practice into this art form and it shows in skills they gain. Strength, courage, power and flexibility are essential traits of these performances. They must also have a confidence in routines and their abilities so that they do not injure themselves while performing.

Many of the people who do this kind of performance art have a position on a circus or are involved in the entertainment industry. They might also be part of companies that are hired to do special performances for carnivals, large parties, festivals and more. Some of these acrobats enjoy doing silks just as a hobby and are not professionally involves.
