Creating Art With Paper Model Kits

By Rena Hudson

Creating miniature versions of buildings, structures, and anything else that you love can be a rewarding, fun experience. It might be surprising to learn, though, that many of these models can be constructed entirely out of paper, without losing any of the detail that makes them so impressive. Many paper model kits are available that can help you end up with a fantastic end result that you will be proud to have displayed in your home.

The first thing you will need to do when selecting a kit to work on is to decide what type of miniature you want to build. There are numerous different kinds available, such as ships, planes, and even trains. The most popular and plentiful, however, are undoubtedly various types of buildings.

While it is definitely true that the flat walls and right angles of buildings such as houses and shops make them suited for construction in paper form, such does not always have to be the case. They can also become quite complicated, depending on the building. Government buildings and landmarks, for example, do not always have rigid shapes, and contain more detail than a typical four-walled structure.

If you have never tackled this type of project before, you may be more comfortable starting out with an easier type. Kits for beginners are readily available as well, and many of them include smaller numbers of parts as well as detailed, simplified directions. You can always work your way towards completing something more complicated if you breeze through the simpler ones.

One of the things that makes this modeling so accessible is that very few special tools are needed to enjoy it. Aside from the paper itself, you will only need adhesive to hold everything together and a good, sharp utility knife to cut things out precisely. You can always upgrade your tools if you find you are getting more involved with the hobby, but these things should be enough to get you started.

Clearly, the thing that you will need to concern yourself with the most is the paper itself. With all-inclusive kits, this is already taken care of, but if you will be printing out your own, you will need to make sure you have all that you need. It will depend on the specific features of your particular model, but heavy card stock is usually good to have to start with.

Models do not look their best if their pieces are left blank, so finding the right textures to decorate them with is important. Many forums and databases have large numbers of these available, often free of charge, so you can decorate to your liking. Planning which ones you will need beforehand is important, as you will need to prepare your paper before you cut and assemble it.

If you are interested in investigating paper model kits, there are many resources available online. People who are extremely involved in and proud of their hobby are happy to share their knowledge with those who may just be getting started. Before long, you will find yourself creating beautiful reproductions with ease.
